This project is two fold in its aims. On one hand it is a study of the potential of locating the National museum of Contemporary art in Filipstad as a counter-proposal to the public discussion of locating it (along with other branches of the national museum) at Tullinløkka previously and now Vestbanen. On the other hand, it attempts to address the avalanche of changes that the museum as an institution has undergone over the past 50 years. It focuses specifically on the changes in the arts, the institution and the public. The mechanism that was used to approach this problem was to divide the task perceptually: The museum was looked at through the prism of formidling (conveying & interpreting the museum’s collection), urban connector, and sensori stimuli as a means to a 21’s century solution.

The resulting project builds on the ideas put fourth in the developing Filipstad regulating plan and is located off the land as an island. It connects to the area first, by extending a proposed public walkway onto and through the island, and secondly by linking into a proposed extension of Huitfeldts gate for vehicular access. In doing so the building anticipates the future development of the area by bringing culture and human traffic through the area.
