The task was to come up with an architectural solution for the site of the recently closed Norske Skog Union paper factory. The factory was one of the largest industries in Skien, whose closing marked the end of a chapter in the history of the town.

The project transforms the former factory site into a festive public landscape that both commemorates the significance of the factory and looks towards the future.

The former pulp tank on the site is turned into a sculpture-garden by planting trees within the remains of the discarded factory machinery. As the trees grow up the remains decay and deteriorate away.

An interior gallery is also located adjacent to the sculpture-park with the intent of becoming a catalyst of cultural activities that could help shape the direction of the area.

However, the landscape should not only look back at history it should celebrate the present, excite its inhabitants and look beyond. A hot air balloon launching ground is integrated into the landscape as a building which houses the balloon equipment and facilities the activity. A yearly festival marks the beginning of the season for the balloon rides overlooking the scenic landscape of Skin.
